WHAT WENT DOWN IN OBERTAURN AT THE SKI WEEK A brief summary of ‘Ski Week’ By: Mark Morris . On March 15 2014 skiers and riders from all around the world gathered in Obertauren Austria to participate in the first annual “Ski Week”. Obertauern is a small ski mecca tucked away in the southeast corner Salzburg in the Radstädter Tauern Mountains. The mountains are majestic, like all mountains in the Alps, and are between 1,630 and 2,526 meters above the sea. . pic 1 . Screen Shot 2014-03-24 at 8.16.38 PM

. Ski-Week is an event that is based on the model of itssister event Yacht-Week. The weeklong event host’s 400 participants from over 30 countries and Icelantic skis joined forces with Ski Week by sponsoring the event. Icelantic skis also offered a free weeklong demo, pressed limited edition ‘Ski Week’ skis, and sent athletes Julian Carr and myself alongside Icelantic founder Ben Anderson to participate in the weeklong event. . Flame throwing bar tenders welcomed the entire Ski Week community by sabering champagne bottles and dancing until the wee hours of the morning. Every morning Icelantic would then set up tent in front of the Hubertus hotel and offer free demos to the 300+ participants from all around the globe. This was a nice add-on because Ski Week also had a limited run of ‘Nomad RKR’s and ‘Oracles’ for sale with the custom Ski Week graphics. . Screen Shot 2014-03-24 at 10.21.03 PM . 'Ski Week' attendees obviously came to Austria to ski but they also came to party and where better to party then après skiing undisputed capitol of the world, Austria. Après skiing in Austria is like none other in the world. Traditional Austrian lederhosen are always at the party and having a good time is top priority. Swedish DJ's provided a great mix of traditional Austrian music and dance party music and the combination of Ski Week with Austrian Apres resulted in hours of party time.

. ok 106 ok 027 . After a beautiful day in the Alps the après started around 3pm and continued until 10pm some nights. All in all the most impressive aspect of' Ski-Week was the seamless organization of consistently unique après party's. And although Ben, Julian, and I had an amazingly fun time with the après, we were in Austria to ski the Alps. . ok 080 ok 204 . We had no idea what to expect when we ventured to the Austrian Alps of Obertaurn but we soon found that the conditions were all overthe map. In the 6 days we skied we saw perfect corn, bulletproof ice, powder, rain, and bluebird. On the first day of skiing Julian and I found a gold mine of couloirs in the valley, and couloir skiing quickly became the focus of the trip due to the perfect conditions. . ok 053 photo-10 . The list of skiable couloirs in this region would take a lifetime to ski so the checklist was narrowed down to a handful of zones. The access to these couloirs was intense and sometimes required venturing on knife ridges with zero room for error. The extremeness was quickly respected when Julian almost slipped off a crux that would have taken him for a ride off a 200ft cliff most likely ending his season and maybe his life. . photo-4 photo-5 . With respect forthe Alps and safety on the mind however, team Icelantic was able to ski every couliour on the list and summit the 4 largest peaksin the valley. One-day team Icelantic was even able to bag 2 couloirs in 2 hours and summit 3 peaks all while filming with an 8-man film crew from Slovenia, Sweden, and London, equipped with 5 cameras, and 2 drones. . photo-7

ok 098 . Ski days in Obertaurn start early and run late because the chair lifts turn from 8:30am until 5:00pm. In Obertaurn almost every chair lift has a small village at the base and large lodge at the top and one evening Icelantic was invited to an exclusive invite-only dinner at the top of the Grunwaldkopfbahn chair lift. It was amazing and we ate a traditional 3 course Austrian meal while tables full of Austrian's in full lederhosen chanted traditional Austrian drinking songs back and fourth. A torch light night ski back down to the base followed the dinner. . photo-6 photo-9 . Ski week was a success for everyone involved and on the last night the entire community gathered for a traditional Austrian banquette at the top ofthe Edelweiss chairlift. Everyone in Ski Week dressed in full lederhosen and together boarded the chairlift in the dark to an unknown location. The chairlift eventually took us all to the Edelweiss lodge and Ski Week packed the finale party with a 3 course meal and a pumping dance party. . photo-8 photo-11 . Over the 6 days we skied we met some amazing people from around the globe and shared some epic times both on and off the mountain. The 'Ski-Week' crew rips and being around people who love the mountains and love to ski was the perfect way for Icelantic to make new friends, share demo skis, and continue to spread the global stoke for Icelantic. We are excited to participate in ski week in the future because at the end of the day.... Nobody après like Austria après, especially when The Ski Week is in town. .
